Acne is a common skin problem that has an impact on most teenagers’ self-esteem and self-image.  It brings burden both physically and mentally.  Besides, physical appearance is one of the critical issues during teenage years.

The main problem with acne is the active sebaceous glands that increasingly produce oil during puberty stage.  Although oil has skin protective function, its excessively elevated amount can result to skin pores’ obstruction. The blocked skin pores would later become swollen and would appear like bleb filled with sebum.  Eventually, this inflammation in the skin pores might erupt and this break in the skin integrity gives a portal of entry for opportunistic microorganisms to cause infection. This swelling in the skin pores is tender and appears reddish and sometimes filled with pus. This condition is then called acne, which is mostly seen in face, chest and back skin surfaces.

Some people indulge themselves in expensive dermatologic procedures like laser therapy and even to the extent of surgery to treat acne. However, there are self-help practices that can be applied to prevent or cure acne.

#1 Apply remedies that is readily available at home

Garlic, apple cider vinegar and honey are some of the efficient home remedies to treat acne. Both garlic and honey have anti-swelling and antibacterial effect. The honey can be applied as face mask while the garlic is usually eaten raw. On the other hand, apple cider vinegar must be mixed with water following one is to eight ratio. This means there should be one part of apple cider vinegar combined with eight parts of water. Then, apply it directly over the acne bleb. Apple cider vinegar is known to counteract the effect of fat and oil.

#2 Use sulfur-based soap

Sulfur based soap often reduces skin oil but it does not make the skin overly dry. However, make sure to follow manufacturer’s instruction because various products vary in terms of mode of application. Most sulfur based soaps are applied twice daily as facial wash.

#3 Avoid oil-based make up and shift to water-based beauty products

Oil based beauty products like make up would add insult to acne. Similar to the sebum produced by the sebaceous glands, oil from beauty products can block the skin pores and will aggravate acne. Besides, the main culprit of acne formation is excessive skin oil. Since make up application becomes a necessity for women these days, make sure to check the label properly. It should be indicated that it is water-based. As much as possible, avoid constant application of make up if not necessary. Remember that beauty products are still mostly made of synthetic chemicals. They may cause irritation and imbalance to the natural structures and functions of the skin in one way or the other.

#4 Eat foods that promotes a healthy skin

Eat foods that are rich in vitamin A and Zinc. Vitamin A is primarily designed to keep the skin healthy. It aids in repairing injured skin tissues like in acne cases. Meanwhile, zinc controls the activity of the sebaceous glands. It ensures that oil production is just sufficient to keep the skin protected but just enough not to cause skin pores’ obstruction that leads to acne. Foods that are rich in vitamin A are yellow fruits and vegetables like papaya, squash, carrots mangoes and many more. Zinc on the other hands can be obtained from meat, cereals, shellfish, nuts and seeds.

These are easy ways to keep the skin healthy and treat acne. These can be done at home without costing too much. However, chronic and severe acne cases that do not respond to simple home remedies must be referred to medical health experts like dermatologist.
